Friendship Feast

Since I am so far behind in blog posts, here is a picture of our friendship mix from our friendship feast at Thanksgiving. The students had fun mixing all of their ingredients from home to make a delicious snack!  The morning class had a saltier mix, with pretzels, nuts, goldfish crackers, and cheetos, and the afternoon's mix turned into a sweeter creation with marshmellows, fruit loops, and chocolate chips. YUM!

Holiday Hall Display

Here are our Precious Gifts that we have had on display this holiday season!

Meet Izzy/Tippy

Meet our Elf on a Shelf, named Izzy for the morning class and named Tippy by the afternoon class. If you're not familiar with the concept of Elf on a Shelf, the basic idea is that the elf watches you during the day, then at night flies to the North Pole to tell Santa about the good (and sometimes not so good) behavior he saw during the day.  The elf then flies back and finds a new place to perch for the next day. When it is Christmas he goes back to the North Pole to stay.

The students have had a lot of fun seeing where Izzy/Tippy's new hiding spot is each day--in the Christmas tree, hanging from the ceiling, even hanging from the clock today, as pictured!

Jingle The Husky Pup

Today we read Jingle All The Way, the story of Jingle the Husky pup who finds a home for Christmas.  Jingle is a really cool, interactive toy that responds to certain lines in the story--he barks happily, he cries, he even sings!  The students really loved this story and hearing Jingle talk to us!

Emily & Stryde

Today one of our high school students who has a companion dog visited our classroom to teach us about what Companion Dogs can do and how we should act when we meet a Companion Dog in the community or at school.
Meet Emily & Stryde

Emily uses a Dynovox to talk for her. She types in the words and the computer reads them to us.  She told us about Stryde's life as he works for her. He accompanies her everywhere, on his leash, and even sleeps in her bed so he can alert her parents if she needs help in the night.

He can help her take her socks off, get a juice box from the fridge, or hand a credit card to a store clerk.
Here he shows us how he can pick up a dropped item (a marker) and give it back to Emily.

Here he is showing us his "lap" command so Emily can brush him, put his vest on, or brush his teeth (with chicken flavored toothpaste!)

Stryde is on a special diet so he stays healthy enough to, hopefully, work for Emily until he is 12 years old. After that, he retires will become her pet.  Stryde's favorite snacks are carrots, peanut butter, apples, pumpkin, and green beans!

If we see a Companion Dog at school, we can wave to the dog and it's owner, or say hello, but we cannot pet it.  The dog is working and we don't want to distract him. When we see Emily after school, at the park or in a store, that might be an OK time to pet Stryde, but we have to ask her for permission first.

Learning about Companion dogs was really interesting to the students and I think they learned a lot. I want to thank Emily for taking time out from her day to come and teach us!

Preschool Pumpkin Patch

Here is our current hallway display. We mixed red finger paint with yellow finger paint to make orange. Then the students cut out a pumpkin shape; added a stem, and now we've got our pumpkin patch!

*Finger painting was an optional activity during free play time.  Students who did not want to finger paint were given the option to make a construction paper pumpkin to add to our pumpkin patch, if they wanted to.

Firefighter Visit

Today we had visits from firefighter Jason and firefighter Jeremy, both from DCFD. The students really enjoy having the firefighters visit and seeing the big ladder truck.

The afternoon students weren't able to go out and see the truck since the rain moved in this afternoon, so firefighter Jason is going to bring the truck back on Friday afternoon.

Helpers!

Does your child tell you about "helpers" at school?  We have 4 jobs, and students rotate daily. With 15/16 students, everyone has a job once every 4 days. It's very exciting when your bird is on a job nest!

Bell Ringer: When play time is done, the Bell Ringer rings the bell to signal everyone clean-up.  Cleaning up is still a work-in-progress!

Line Leader: Leads the line when we go to the "big bathrooms," to the playground, or to the bus.  The Line Leader also washes their hands first before snack time.

Weather Helper:  During circle time, the weather helper goes down the hall to look outside (no windows in our classroom!) and see what the weather is for the current day. They come back and turn the arrows on our weather chart to point to today's weather.

Calendar Helper:  Uses a pointer to point to the numbers on the calendar, and sticks today's date on the calendar.

Sept. 19-23: Apples!

We've had a fun week talking about all things APPLE!   We also continue learning school rules and routines, which is going very well.

We did our first cutting and gluing project on Monday, Letter A, which was sent home.  All in all, it went well. It's always a little nerve-wracking when we hand out scissors to 16 students for the first time!

Wednesday we used dot-a-dot stampers to decorate apples (small motor activity). They turned out so cute we may display them for awhile before sending them home.

Next week: Fabulous Fall!

Wednesday, Sept. 14th

Another great day!!

Today's Books...
Today's activity, a circle/ gluing/ glitter activity that will come home tomorrow (activity goal: small motor practice and shape identification).

Check your child's folder for our 1st day project!

If your child talk about something from school, and you're not sure what it is....ask me!  It could be something others are wondering about, too. I can include it in a blog or newsletter :)

Fabulous First Day!

We had a super first day of preschool yesterday! Everyone was so well-behaved and happy to be here. I know we are going to have a great year!

Yesterday we read 2 books (pardon the fuzzy images),
Oliver Finds His Way by Phyllis Root

and Silly Tilly by Eileen Spinelli. (one of my very favorite read alouds!)

We sang a couple of songs, The Monkey and the Alligator, and the Tooty Ta. Ask your child about the actions of the Tooty Ta!

We had inside playtime, a snack, and even got to check out the playground. I'm glad we had time since it sounds like it may be too cold for us to do so on Wednesday!

We also learned how to use the "big bathrooms"--the Elementary bathrooms. We learned how to know which bathroom was the boys or girls, how to turn on the big sink, and use the automatic paper towel dispenser--fun! :)

Learning the preschool rules and routines is a lot of work, but it's fun at the same time.  Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!
